Developing Maths Eyes helps students to describe the world. It shows that mathematics is not abstracted from their everyday life, but that it is related to everything. Most importantly it encourages students to see themselves as a ‘maths person’.

Show your students a Maths Eyes picture prompt. The pictures have been sorted into Australian Curriculum strands and have been chosen to stimulate discussion. Give them time to talk about what they see in the picture before you ask a mathematical question.

Three street signs on a street. The topmost sign is yellow diamond in shape and shows a speed bump with an arrow above (indicating speed bumps ahead). Below this another yellow sign says 10 km/h in the upper part and Next 180 m on the lower part (indicating the speed bumps continue for the next 180 m of the street and that a driving speed of 10 kilometres per hour is recommended). Below this is a parking sign that says 1P 7.30am-11pm (indicating parking time is limited to 1 hour between those times).
