Explicit teaching in mathematics: the model and components

Genovieve Grouios, mathematics consultant and Allan Dougan, AAMT, outline what it means to use explicit teaching approaches when teaching mathematics in Australian classrooms, based on pertinent and evidence-based research that formed the essential components of the Explicit Teaching in Maths professional learning materials.
The presentation also includes a brief discussion on Cognitive Load Theory and how it affects students learning mathematics and how explicit teaching can be used to successfully support teaching and learning mathematics to become a successful complementary tool for the Australian teachers’ toolbox.
